Photoluminescent tape for stair edge visibility

Specifying glow-in-the-dark stair nosing tape by brightness class, charge time and substrate, for egress routes that work in a blackout.

Photoluminescent tape for stair edge visibility

How the glow works

Photoluminescent tape stores energy from ambient light and releases it slowly as a green-yellow glow when the lights fail. It needs no power and no maintenance beyond cleaning, which is why it appears on stair nosings, handrails and egress paths. It is a wayfinding aid, not a substitute for emergency lighting.

Performance is graded by brightness and decay. Standards such as DIN 67510 classify materials by luminance measured minutes after charging stops, and the classes differ by a factor of several. A cheap tape that glows brightly for ten minutes and fades is not equivalent to a high-class material that stays visible for hours.

Where it belongs on a stair

The nosing is the highest-risk point, so tape goes on the leading edge of each tread, or in the groove of an aluminium nosing profile. Keep the strip continuous across the width, and avoid wrapping it around the nose, where foot traffic and cleaning brushes wear it fastest. Landings benefit from a strip at the top and bottom riser.

  • Apply to a clean, dry, dust-free surface above 10 degrees Celsius
  • Use a primer on concrete, which is alkaline and dusty
  • Avoid polishing the surface after installation
  • Inspect quarterly, since wax and floor finish mute the glow

Adhesion is the usual failure mode, not luminance. Stair treads are abraded, washed and sometimes coated with release agents, and a tape that lifts at the nose becomes a trip hazard itself. A textured, anti-slip carrier with a pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive handles that environment better than a smooth film.

Tape is supplied in 25 mm to 50 mm widths on 5 m to 10 m rolls, often with an anti-slip grit surface. For a building project, specify the brightness class, the glow duration and the slip rating together, since buyers who compare only width and price usually end up with an under-performing strip.
