Mouth tape for CPAP and sleep ranges: a wholesale sourcing checklist

Formats, materials, minimum order and the compliance line a distributor has to hold. What a mouth tape programme looks like before the artwork is approved.

Mouth tape for CPAP and sleep ranges: a wholesale sourcing checklist

Mouth tape is one of the smallest items in a sleep range and one of the fastest to quote, because the specification is short: a strip, a skin-friendly adhesive, a box. The decisions that actually delay an order are the format, the residue performance and who carries the labelling. This note sets out how we run those three with a distributor.

Start from the format, not the artwork

Three formats cover most of the enquiries we receive. The first is a boxed strip count, typically thirty pieces per box, packed for retail and travel. The second is a book-style pack printed on paper and paperboard, where the pack itself is the applicator and the print area carries the brand. The third is a combined patch that pairs a nasal strip with a mouth strip on one carrier, which is what buyers assembling a single sleep SKU usually end up choosing.

Format decides the tooling. Once the die and the box are fixed, changing the strip length later means a new die, so it is worth settling the strip dimensions before the first sample run rather than after the packaging proof.

The material question is really an adhesive question

The sleep strips we produce are specified as 95% cotton and 5% spandex, with a gentle coated paper face on the book-style packs and a non-woven construction on the multi-region patches. Buyers tend to fixate on the fabric; the failure that generates returns is residue. A strip that holds through the night but leaves adhesive on the upper lip will not be reordered, whatever the fabric says on the box.

Ask for the adhesion and residue data with the sample, not after the first production run. If a supplier cannot state both, the sample is the only evidence you have.

What a private-label run covers

  • Minimum order: 1,000 pieces on the standard mouth tape boxes.
  • Indicative price at that volume: US$0.02–0.05 per piece, moving with strip size, pack count and print.
  • Print: box artwork, brand colours and language variants are produced to the buyer’s files.
  • Samples: produced against the agreed specification before the bulk run is released.

The compliance line a distributor has to hold

We manufacture the strip. We do not hold a medical device registration in your market, and a supplier that offers to lend you one is handing you a problem rather than a shortcut. The labelling, the claims and any registration sit with the party placing the product on that market. What we provide is the manufacturing record: material safety data and test documentation issued on request, so the file you submit is complete.

That boundary matters most for CPAP-adjacent listings. Taping the mouth during CPAP use is a clinical decision between a patient and their clinician, not a product claim. Sell the strip as a sleep accessory with the manufacturer’s instructions in the pack, and keep the clinical language out of the listing.

What to put in the enquiry

  • Format and strip dimensions, or the retail pack you are matching.
  • Material and adhesive preference, plus any residue requirement.
  • Box count, artwork status and the languages printed on the pack.
  • Destination market, because it sets the documentation you will need.
  • Target landed price and annual volume, so the quote reflects the real run size.

An enquiry with those five lines comes back as a costed offer with a sample timeline rather than a price range. The reverse — a one-line request for the cheapest mouth tape — usually ends with a sample nobody can repeat in production.
