Why distributors buy jumbo logs and slit to order
A distributor rarely needs one width. It needs a range that matches local demand: 18mm for detail, 24mm for trim, 38mm and 48mm for general masking, 75mm for panel work. Buying jumbo logs and slitting to order keeps stock flexible and cuts the number of SKUs sitting in the warehouse at the end of a slow quarter.
What belongs on a slitting specification
Custom width masking tape is mostly a slitting decision. Width tolerance is commonly plus or minus 0.5mm on paper tapes, and core inner diameter has to match the customer's dispenser. Wind direction matters too: an inside wind suits a hand dispenser, an outside wind suits a machine, and the wrong choice shows up as drag on the first roll.
- Width and tolerance, commonly plus or minus 0.5mm on paper tapes.
- Core inner diameter and core material.
- Wind direction and roll diameter for the customer's dispenser.
- Maximum splices per roll, plus the required roll length.
Packing, labelling and MOQ
Shrink film with a printed label beats loose cartons for dust control and shelf appeal. State the label content clearly: width, length, adhesive type and batch code. Minimum order quantities usually follow the slitting setup, so a mixed width order on one log can be more economical than several small runs spread across a month.
Approve a signed sample before the first production run and keep it as the reference for later batches. Width tolerance and adhesive lot are the two variables most likely to drift, so a masking tape jumbo roll supplier should be checked on both at goods inwards rather than after a customer complaint. Slit masking tape rolls that arrive out of square cause dispenser jams.
