Arc flash hazard tape for electrical switchgear

Marking arc flash and approach boundaries on the floor around switchgear, with the tape properties that suit an electrical room.

Arc flash hazard tape for electrical switchgear

A floor marking with a safety function

An arc flash boundary is a distance, and a distance on a drawing means nothing to a technician standing at a panel. Floor tape translates that boundary into something visible: a line on the slab showing where ordinary clothing stops and protective equipment begins. The tape is part of the labelling system, alongside the equipment label and the study behind it.

Because the location is an electrical room, the tape should be non-conductive and free of metal particles. A PVC film with a rubber or acrylic adhesive is the normal choice; foil tapes and metalised films have no place on a switchgear floor, however good they look.

Marking the boundaries

Most sites mark two lines: the arc flash boundary, where PPE becomes mandatory, and the limited approach boundary, which only qualified staff cross. A third line is sometimes added for the restricted approach boundary. Each needs a label, because a coloured line without text is decoration rather than instruction.

  • Check the study first; do not infer distances from panel size
  • Lay lines square to the panel face, not to the room walls
  • Use 50 mm to 100 mm tape and a contrasting colour such as red or yellow
  • Re-mark whenever equipment or the study changes

Adhesion in this environment is usually straightforward, since sealed epoxy floors are smooth and clean. The risk is slip: a glossy vinyl line on a polished floor is slicker than the surrounding surface, so specify a textured or anti-slip carrier where technicians work in boots.

Orders are typically small and specific: a few rolls of 33 m in one width and colour, often with printed legend tape for the boundary text. Supply the legend as a separate printed roll rather than expecting the installer to cut letters by hand.
